Meet Maude (and her friend). What? Do you lot non shout out your furniture? No? Oh. Um, me neither... Anyway, this cabinet/bookshelf gear upwardly together with I become way back. As in, since birth. They belonged to my parents when I was a tiddler together with they used to live stained wood. They belike toll a pretty penny dorsum inwards the day. I know this because they are back-breakingly heavy. Anyway, my parents divorced when I was a tiddler together with my dad got custody of this furniture. It changed hands a duad of times, together with inwards the procedure they got ruined. Well, non irreparably ruined, but temporarily ruined. I don't own got a motion-picture present of the hot mess they were when I recieved them, but I practise own got a motion-picture present of them earlier their latest makeover.

Ignore the horrendous mess, please. This was taken recently, after my first refinishing attempt but earlier the latest makeover. Unfortunately, I practise non own got "Before" pics from the offset fourth dimension I painted it several years ago.
"Someone" (name withheld to protect the guilty) painted them without doing whatever prep-work whatsoever - together with may fifty-fifty own got exactly spray painted them, non certain - amongst no sanding, priming, etc. So past times the fourth dimension my dad got them dorsum together with gave them to me, the pigment was literally peeling together with hanging all the means off. As in, you lot could grab a strip of pigment inwards some areas together with exactly pare it from exceed to bottom. In other areas, it was impossible to remove. At this indicate (about vii years agone maybe?) I had never painted a slice of slice of furniture inwards my life. I knew nada well-nigh the right process. All I knew was that I was going to own got to strip this nasty, peely pigment off somehow together with re-paint it. Problem was, I had no thought what type of pigment was used to start out amongst together with I had no thought how to become well-nigh stripping/painting or anything involving slice of furniture refinishing whatsoever.

The offset fourth dimension around, it was not a project of love. It was a project of hate. I hated every infinitesimal of it. I tried v hundred zillion dissimilar pigment stripping agents together with none of them worked. Some spots had peeled off effortlessly, spell other patches were clinging for dearest life together with refused to come upwardly off. I wishing I had a "before" motion-picture present for you, but sadly I practise not. Well, I own got "before" pics but non a "before, before" pic when it was inwards actually bad shape. Anyway, after literally months of chipping away piffling past times piffling together with lastly finding Citri-Strip which seemed to work, together with tons of sanding, etc., I got the pigment off (and swore I'd never refinish slice of furniture ever again! Ha.). Now, unremarkably if you lot are exactly going to repaint a piece, you lot could exactly sand together with skip the whole paint-stripping step. But since the pigment was peeling completely off inwards some large areas, together with the woods underneath was totally un-prepped together with withal had glossy varnish of some form on it, I had no pick but to withdraw the paint. I sanded, primed together with painted it a creamy white color. It was lovely. However, I made a fatal mistake. I did non seal it together with I did non permit it cure earlier stashing items within it together with on the shelves. (Rookie mistake!) Now, upwardly until recently, I was left amongst a chipping mess that needed to live re-painted yet again. It's been living inwards our office/living room since nosotros moved into this house, together with it's been an unorganized mess of books together with clutter. This time, I knew what I was doing. This time, it was a project of love. So basically, I should give thank you lot this "someone" for ruining this slice of slice of furniture together with forcing me to larn how to refinish it, thereby inadvertently setting inwards motion this whole crazy blogging develop that I've flora myself on.

I should every bit good shout out that when I inherited the furniture, the backing had been hideously wallpapered. For a while, I covered the bookshelf backing inwards cloth but it was inwards such bad shape I lastly exactly removed it together with threw it away. I originally painted the backing of the cabinet fifty-fifty though it was that flimsy cardboard stuff.

Since this slice of furniture is going to alive inwards our modern office/living room, I wanted to practise something a piffling fleck dissimilar amongst it. Modern, but non every bit bold every bit this dresser it would live sharing a room with. Subtle but non boring.

Up until I repainted it, this slice was used every bit a "catch all" for our junk. I hadn't bothered to decorate it, nosotros exactly stashed materials on together with within it together with added it to the "to bargain amongst later" list. Well, the province of affairs has instantly been dealt with, thus without farther ado, I'd similar to innovate you lot to the novel together with improved Maude. (And her friend.)

You got a sneak peek of her inwards this post, but hither is the official reveal. I painted these pieces amongst Behr semi-gloss pigment inwards "Chocolate Froth," which is a grayish-beige off-white color. We'll telephone telephone it "greige-y white." The inlay part on the cabinet doors was painstakingly painted amongst an itsy bitsy artist's brush using Martha Stewart Living metallic element pigment inwards "Golden Pearl." I spray painted all of the hardware gold. The exceed together with bottom cabinet handles came from Home Depot, together with the ornate pulls on the middle cabinets are vintage together with I ordered them from an Etsy shop.

I every bit good replaced the drinking glass shelf within the cabinet amongst ane made of MDF. I exactly set the quondam shelf on exceed of a slice of MDF together with traced it amongst a Sharpie (no measurement required!), together with thus used my circular saw to cutting it out. I painted it to match, together with I similar the hold off of it ameliorate than the glass.

Old drinking glass shelf on exceed of a canvas of MDF. I exactly traced together with cut.
I waxed the shelves since I knew I would live putting things there, but I am letting the residual of it cure together with trying non to impact or mess amongst it anytime soon. I exactly haven't had the fourth dimension or divulge energy to wax the whole thing.

I had a lot of fun decorating the shelves. One of my favorite things is this piffling scandalize total of vintage costume jewelry that I inherited from my great-grandmother. It's been stashed inwards my jewelry box since I was a piffling girl, together with I'm happy to live able to display it now.

If you've been reading my weblog for real long, together with thus you lot belike know past times instantly that I am pretty sentimental. I love furniture/decor that has a even out or some form of history or important behind it. Trends are fun, but they come upwardly together with go. My favorite things inwards our abode are things that convey dorsum memories or own got some form of even out behind them. If you lot are trying to decorate a room together with you lot own got no thought where to start, inwards my sentiment you lot should ever start past times bringing inwards the things that hateful the most to you, together with and thus construct from there. You tin transportation away ever add together trendy materials inwards easy-to-change form, similar pillows or curtains.
